One of the oldest cultivated fruits, grapes were grown in China before the ice age and appear in paintings on the walls of ancient Egyptian tombs. Grapevines arrived in Australia in 1788 with the First Fleet. They were planted in Sydney Cove just a few days after landing and four years later in Parramatta. Today, Australia is one of the most successful grape-growing countries in the world, producing hundreds of varieties for eating and winemaking. Grapes are a good source of fibre, vitamin C, potassium and energy, and contain more natural sugar than any other fruit.

Grapes are available all year round, but are at their best from November to May. The fruit does not ripen further after picking, so it’s important to try before you buy. All grapes are covered in a dusty white film known as “bloom” that protects the fruit from moisture loss, fungus and decay. Choose grapes with fresh green stems and plump fruit that’s firmly attached to the stalks. Avoid bunches with soft or wrinkled fruit, or grapes that are brown around the stem.

Grapes are great on their own, in salads or desserts, and as part of a cheese platter. Freeze picked grapes in airtight containers and serve as an after-school snack. Great with saffron, brie, blue cheese, mascarpone, hazelnuts, walnuts, pastry, chilli, sweet potato, pork, chicken and fish.

Store unwashed grapes in an airtight container or a sealed plastic bag in the fridge. Wash grapes just before serving or you’ll remove the protective bloom and shorten their shelf life.

Ever wondered what the difference is between raisins and sultanas? Black grapes are dried to make raisins, while small green seedless grapes are used for sultanas. The varieties we eat fresh are known as table grapes.
